Benefits of Membership

Benefits of Membership

MSSC is one of the most active medical societies in the country. Members are engaged in programs and initiatives that address issues affecting the health of people living in Wichita and Sedgwick County. MSSC also is a local and state advocate on behalf of the medical profession, patient care and the practice of medicine.

Membership in the MSSC is a great way to build friendships with fellow physicians and develop referral connections. MSSC boards and committees also offer leadership opportunities.

Here are some other of MSSC’s many benefits:

  • Membership Roster

Physician members are listed in the Medical Society’s annual membership roster alphabetically, by their ABMS-recognized specialty and by practice group. The MSSC Roster is distributed each year to MSSC members and to other physicians, hospitals, pharmacists and related medical professionals throughout the state.

  • Malpractice Insurance

Membership in Kansas Medical Society (KMS) and MSSC enables physicians to obtain liability coverage from the Kansas Medical Mutual Insurance Company (KaMMCO), KMS’s physician-owned malpractice insurance company.

  • Disability and Long-Term Care Insurance

MSSC offers members discounted disability insurance and long-term care insurance policies.

  • Messaging Service

MSSC and KMS members have free use of DocbookMD, a fast, HIPAA-secure messaging service for smartphones and tablet devices. It includes accurate, up-to-date physician contact information and details on local pharmacies.

  • Patient Referral Service

In response to requests from the public for referrals, physician names are provided on a rotating basis by specialty.

  • MSSC Legislative Committee

This committee works closely with MSSC’s executive director and KMS staff to monitor legislative issues related to the practice of medicine in Kansas, including medical malpractice, regulations and scope of practice. The committee communicates its positions and concerns to the Sedgwick County Legislative Delegation. MSSC board members also travel to Washington, D.C., each year to meet with members of Congress.

  • MSSC Meetings/CME

Membership meetings provide networking opportunities and informative presentations. Some meetings also offer CME credit.

  • Young Physicians Group

WD<40 (Wichita Docs Under 40) hosts mixers and other events that enable young physicians to network and get to know each other.

  • Initiatives/EMS System

MSSC is involved in a number of initiatives, such as maternal infant health, sports concussion and end-of-life planning.  It also provides medical oversight of the Sedgwick EMS System.

  • MSSC News

The Medical Society utilizes its monthly MSSC News to distribute, by mail or email, information of interest and importance to Sedgwick County physicians.

  • Website/Facebook/Twitter

Through its various online channels, the MSSC shares news and events of particular interest to local physicians.

  • Medical Provider Resources

This MSSC-operated entity helps physicians and hospitals efficiently respond to the growing demand for credentialing information and other practice management requirements. MPR verifies the credentials of physicians and allied health practitioners seeking membership and/or privileges at participating hospitals or medical facilities at the time of initial application, reappointment or re-credentialing. Providers complete only one standard application, resulting in less paperwork. Other services include provider enrollment with insurance plans and Medicare/Medicaid, Kansas licensure renewal, DEA registration or renewal, network credentialing and recruitment credentialing.

  • ProviDRs Care

The only physician-owned PPO in Kansas (formerly known as WPPA, Inc.) is a managed health care provider network. Providers and hospitals in Kansas and adjoining states offer their services through ProviDRs Care to self-funded groups, fully insured businesses, insurance companies and third-party administrators.

  • Project Access

The nationally recognized Project Access program was initiated by MSSC in 1999 to address the needs of low-income, uninsured residents of Sedgwick County. More than half of all MSSC members participate in the physician-led program, which efficiently coordinates donated medical care and services provided by physicians, area hospitals, pharmacies and other providers. Central Plains Health Care Partnership is the non-profit entity overseeing Project Access and other not-for-profit activities.

  • Medical Careers Loan Fund

A career in medicine as a physician, nurse or other health professional is rewarding but costly to pursue. The MSSC Medical Careers Loan Fund is designed to lesson that burden for students from Sedgwick County. The loan fund provides financial assistance for students going to medical school or training for a career in nursing, medical technology, X-ray technology, inhalation therapy or other allied health field.

Assistance: The loans are for tuition, books, fees, and related expenses and all funds are paid directly to the registrar of the involved school. The amount loaned annually is determined by the fund’s committee, based on the applicant’s financial needs. The loans are low interest and are a maximum of $6,000 per school year ($3,000 per semester). Repayment begins following completion of residency or other training. Learn more by this guide to MCLF Policies and Procedures

Application: To apply for a loan, please complete the MCLF Loan Application Form and the Letter of Reference and return by September 1st to:

  • Medical Student Emergency Loan Fund

The fund, created in 1992 with the assistance of the MSSC Alliance, provides financial assistance to medical students in need of a short-term, emergency loan. Interest-free loans up to $500 are made for a period of 90 days.
